Incoming 7th Grade Information

book

It's hard to believe we have already begun preparing for the 2020-2021 Academic Year.  There is important information we want to share with current sixth graders regarding the coming months.

6th Grade Tour

All students planning on coming to Sierra Vista next year are welcome to campus for a tour  on Friday, April 10th. This will be a fun and exciting day for students as they feel that much closer to the thrills of middle school.  Students should talk to their 6th grade teacher to learn more about what this morning will consist of so they can be prepared.

6th Grade Parent Night

We will host a 6th Grade Parent Night on Thursday, April 16th in our MPR. We will hold two different sessions that night to accommodate for the number of people who need to fit on campus. Here is the breakdown:

Eastwood, Northwood, Stonegate, and Other Elementary (Non-Feeder Schools) will be from 5:30-6:30

Brywood, Canyonview, and Santiago Hills will be from 7-8

This year, we will not be hosting an Honors-Only Parent Session. Our hope is to unify our student experience while being able to address the needs of all students during our presentation.

Honors Placement

We will continue with the criteria that was set last year for placing students in our Honors ELA and SS classes:

Students must receive a “yes” response in two of three measures in order to be placed in Honors:

  1. General Ed students must have an “A-“ or above grade in trimesters one and two of 6th grade Language Arts (reading and writing only). APAAS students need a “B-“ or above.
  2. The student must have demonstrated mastery on a summative analytical writing assessment during 6th grade.
  3. Teacher appraises student to be placed in Honors. Teacher may use the Characteristics of an Honors Student document as a guide which can be found on Sharepoint.

Timeline for Placement:

May 1st: Course Request Visible on Parent Portal when Trimester 3 Progress Reports are released

May 1st – May 8th: Appeal Window Open

May 11th: Send Appeal Notifications

Appeal Process:

If a student/parent wants to appeal LA/SS placement, they need to send an email detailing why they believe the child should be in Honors. The email should be sent to the 6th grade teacher and to jeffreymorano@iusd.org. From there, multiple data points will be used to determine placement before a decision is communicated to parents.
