We will post our 22-23 materials online at 3 PM on Friday, April 1st.  This will be found under "Parents"--"Enrollment and Registration."  Until then, here is the information your 6th grade teacher should have shared with you:

Honors Placement

We will continue with the criteria that was used the last couple of years for placing students in our Honors ELA and SS classes.

Criteria

Students must receive a “yes” response in two of three measures in order to be placed in Honors:

1.       General Ed students must have an “A-“ or above grade in trimesters one and two of 6th grade Language Arts (reading and writing only).  APAAS students need a “B-“ or above.

2.       The student must have demonstrated mastery on a summative analytical writing assessment during 6th grade.

3.     Teacher appraises student to be placed in Honors.  Teachers may use the IUSD Honors Teaching and Learning document as a guide which can be also be found on Sharepoint.  If teachers feel that a student could be successful in Honors, they should err on the side of giving the student the Honors recommendation.

You will find that other information may be pre-populated on the Sharepoint, including:

                                                SBAC Scores

                                                STAR Renaissance Scores

Timeline for Placement

April 1st: 6th Grade Elementary Teacher Appraisal Window opens

April 18th: Appraisal Window closes

April 29th: Course Request Visible on Parent Portal at 3 PM

April 29th – May 9th: Appeal Window Open

May 11th: Appeal Notifications sent

Appeal Process

If a student/parent wants to appeal placement, they need to send an email detailing why they believe the child should be in Honors.  The email should be sent to the 6th grade teacher and to me at jeffreymorano@iusd.org.  From there, Mr. Morano will use multiple data points and may follow-up with teachers for writing samples and/or for further insights.  From there, placement will be determined and communicated with parents.

Elective Selection (Begins April 11th)

Students will designate their top three elective choices so we can begin to build their schedules.  We will send relevant information along with the Google Form to all 6th grade families on Monday, April 11th.  All students must submit the Google Form by Monday, April 18th.

Virtual 6th Grade Parent Presentation and Live Virtual Q & A Session (Info Sent on April 11th; Parent Q and A will be held on April 14th)

We will provide a virtual 6th Grade Parent Presentation that will be shared with families on Monday, April 11th.  On Thursday, April 14th, we will hold a Question and Answer Zoom Webinar from 6 – 7 PM to help answer any outstanding questions parents may have after watching the virtual presentation.  That same evening, we will also provide an opportunity for parents of Special Education students to learn more about our programs from 5:15 – 6 PM.

Virtual 6th Grade Tour and Live Virtual Q & A Session (Info Sent on April 11th; Student Q and A will be held on April 13th)

We will provide a virtual 6th Grade Tour that will be shared with families on Monday, April 11th when we communicate regarding Elective Selection and the 6th Grade Parent Presentation.  Students should review this before Wednesday afternoon (April 13th) when our ASB students and staff will host a live Q & A session from 3:15 – 4 PM to help answer any outstanding questions at that time.

Enrollment

In preparing for your students’ arrival, it would be helpful to get as accurate a count as possible of who plans on attending Sierra Vista in-person next year, who plans on attending IVA, who is undecided, and who plans on attending neither one.  Please share this link with your families in your communications with parents so they can respond by Friday, March 18th
